About Ultimate IAC
The Permanent Solution to Mercury PWM IAC Failures
IAC failures have become an expensive and frustrating problem on many Mercury and Mercury Racing engines. These engines use a PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) Idle Air Control valve, and when the IAC is operated at high duty cycles, excessive heat can eventually cause the coil winding to fail.
The IAC failure itself is inconvenient. The bigger concern is what can happen next.
When the winding fails and shorts, it can damage the PCM's IAC driver circuit—potentially turning a failed IAC valve into a multi-thousand-dollar PCM repair or replacement.
Marine Design Corporation originally addressed this problem with our popular fused IAC protection harness. The fuse helps protect the PCM if the factory IAC shorts, but it doesn't prevent the IAC itself from failing.
We wanted to eliminate the problem, not just protect against the consequences.
Introducing the Ultimate IAC
The Ultimate IAC replaces the failure-prone PWM IAC with a proven GM-style stepper motor IAC and completely isolates it from the PCM.
The PCM's original PWM command is connected to an opto-isolated input in the Ultimate IAC controller. The controller interprets that signal and converts it into the commands necessary to precisely position the stepper motor.
The PCM continues to control idle speed exactly as intended—but it is electrically isolated from the IAC motor and its drive circuitry.
100% PCM Isolation
Unlike the original PWM IAC, the Ultimate IAC motor is not powered by the PCM's IAC driver circuit.
An opto-isolator provides an electrical barrier between the PCM control output and the Ultimate IAC electronics. The PCM provides only the control signal; the stepper motor is operated by completely separate drive circuitry.
This means an electrical failure of the stepper motor or its driver cannot feed damaging motor current back through the PCM's IAC output.
And from the PCM's perspective, nothing has changed. It continues sending the same PWM command it always has.
True Plug-and-Play Installation
We designed a dedicated housing specifically for the application and manufacture it using 3D printing technology. The assembly bolts directly onto the engine using the existing mounting points.
No drilling. No machining. No engine modifications. No PCM programming.
The system uses a readily available, off-the-shelf GM-style stepper IAC motor, so the valve itself is not an expensive proprietary replacement part.
Why Stepper Motor Control?
The original PWM IAC regulates airflow by continuously energizing an electromagnetic coil. At high duty cycles, the coil can generate substantial heat—and prolonged operation under these conditions can eventually lead to winding failure.
A stepper motor works differently. The Ultimate IAC controller converts the PCM's PWM request into a commanded valve position and electronically controls the stepper motor to achieve the required airflow.
The PCM still gets the idle control response it expects, but without directly powering the IAC motor.

Stop Protecting the Failure. Eliminate it.
Our fused IAC protection harness remains an excellent way to protect a PCM while retaining the factory PWM IAC. But the fuse doesn't change the fundamental weakness of the original system—the PWM IAC can still fail.
The Ultimate IAC takes the next step.
It replaces the PWM valve with stepper-motor technology while electrically isolating the PCM from the motor that controls the valve.

The PCM sees the control response it expects.
The engine gets the airflow it needs.
And the expensive PCM is no longer electrically exposed to an IAC motor failure.
